BBC director acknowledges that diversity needs to be hardwired into the BBC

BBC content director Charlotte Moore said now it the time that diversity needs to be hard wired into the corporation, including into senior leadership positions such as the senior commissioning team.

Speaking at the first day of the Edinburgh TV festival, she said

If we don’t reflect the nation, we are making our programmes for, then we will have failed and eventually we won’t be able to meet the challenges of the next few years”

“I think this is the moment”

She went onto say “It’s been too long coming and it’s beholden on all of us in the industry to make this the moment of absolute change.”

She went on to share examples of diverse programs, such as Oscar winning director Steve McQueen’s upcoming TV series Small Axe, as well as A suitable Boy, Noughts and Crosses & May I destroy you. The three year £100m diversity fund for diverse talent should underpin a “seismic change”

She finished on sating “There’s much more to do”

“We need to see diversity right at the top of the organisation, at the top of the commissioning teams, so we need to look at succession planning.”

At Ohcul jobs, we promote diversity within the workplace through removing the opportunity for people’s unconscious bias to reflect in the recruitment process. Ohcul has been found on the basis of responsible recruitment and looks to remove structural racism out of the recruitment process.

Employee diversity provides a number of benefits to any organisation (large and small). Ethnically diverse companies perform 35% better than their industry median and gender diverse companies are 15% more likely to haver returns above the industry median. With the national customer base becoming more diverse, it is important that a company is representative to fully understand its clients’ needs and, according to the latest research, 67% of employees cite a diverse workforce is a key factor when looking at a role.

At Ohcul, we remove the opportunity for hidden bias from a CV review stage. Our unique tool removes identifying data from a clients CV allowing a recruiter to progress the best candidates.
